Frequently asked questions
Short answers to the questions I hear most about appointments, fees, engagement letters and case updates.
What should I bring to the first meeting?
Bring any contracts, court papers, letters, emails and payment records you have. If something is missing, that is fine; we will list what is needed and where to get it. A short timeline of events in date order makes the meeting more productive.
How are attorney's fees set?
Fees depend on the type of matter and its scope and are set out in a written engagement agreement. Depending on the case, the fee may be hourly, a flat fee or a contingency fee; a contingency fee agreement must be in writing. Fees are discussed at the first meeting rather than listed on this site.
When do you become my attorney?
An attorney-client relationship starts only after a conflict check and a signed engagement agreement. Calling, emailing or messaging the office does not by itself make me your attorney, so please do not send confidential details before then.
Can I follow my case myself?
Yes. Many Texas courts offer online case search where parties can see filings and hearing dates. I also send you updates at every important step, such as a hearing date, a settlement offer or a ruling.
Can we meet by phone or video?
Yes. I meet by phone or video with clients outside Austin or who cannot come to the office. You can share documents by email; I will ask for originals when needed.
Which courts do you appear in?
Most of my cases are in Travis County and the surrounding counties, including justice, county and district courts. I am licensed in Texas only.
Are the legal guides a substitute for legal advice?
No. The guides explain the general framework and reflect the law on the date they were last reviewed. Deadlines and requirements can change based on your facts, so talk to a lawyer about your own situation with your documents in hand.
Why are there no results or reviews on this site?
Lawyer advertising is regulated. Results in other cases do not predict the outcome of yours, and this site does not publish client testimonials, case results or ratings. It contains introductory and general information only.
